There are numerous knots available to the angler, and if you are just starting out in the game, the choices available can numb the brain a little. In my experience only a small handful of those knots need be used. I use the following knots as the occasion suits:

Sunglasses For Fishing and Boating

This is where a good pair of sport sunglasses designed for fishing and boating are needed not only to make these participating in these sports easy on the eyes but to also protect your vision from harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun and water surface glare.

Polarized sunglasses with UV filters enable anglers and boaters to see beneath the surface of the water giving them the advantage over standard sunglasses to be able to see fish and objects lurking below the water surface. This type of eye protection uses a polarizing film built into the lenses that blocks horizontal glare and allows you to see through the surface of the water. Most boaters and anglers own several types of tinted sunglasses to allow for different light conditions on any given day. Sunglasses that feature yellow tinted lenses gather more light adding contrast during cloudy and overcast days. For bright sunny days look for a pair of sunglasses that feature brown, copper, or amber lenses. These will handle the bright rays of the sun, reduce surface glare and also add contrast.

Offshore fishing looking good this weekend

This weekend looks like offshore fishing could be exciting. The fish are there. Two blue-water reports from Tuesday are examples of what could be waiting for big-game anglers.

Matt Feinstone and crew of Billfish out of Ventnor had 68 and 60-pound yellowfin tuna and leadered a blue marlin at Spencer Canyon. Feinstone fought and released the blue marlin and Bill Lacovara caught the 68-pound YFT.

The #1 Rule to Know Before You Go Trout Fishing

Trout fishing – many expressions exist to describe its beauty, its art, and science. It is one of those outdoor activities that connects us to something primal. That is, man facing nature and hunting for food, one’s basic need. Although we don’t depend on our bounty for survival anymore, the instinct is still there.

For many of us, fishing is still driven by our survival instinct. No, I don’t mean that we have to fish to bring food on the dinner table. Having a teenager at home, that would be nearly impossible. I don’t think I have ever caught enough fish that would satisfy his appetite. Rather, the survival I am talking about is an escape from everyday stress and mundane life. And if I catch a fish, that’s just an added bonus.

Selecting the Right Lures and Baits For Bass Fishing

As most of you fishermen will know it is very difficult to choose one, single best lure for bass fishing in North America. Spinner bait is usually the one that springs to mind that most fishermen would cite for being the best bass fishing lure, if they could only choose a single bait to use.

That choice would be based largely on the fact that it is probably the most versatile to use. You can use it to fish at various depths, not limiting yourself to your choices if the bass are suspended, shallow, or deep. If you cast your spinner, and start reeling immediately, it will stay on the surface for shallow fishing. You can cast and then wait a bit, letting it sink partway to the bottom, so you can catch suspended fish, or you can let it sink to the bottom before beginning your retrieve to catch those fish on the bottom.
